The Reverend James Cumming (1777-1861)

Rev. James Cumming, a long standing rector at North Runcton, was also a professor of Chemistry at Trinity College, Cambridge. He published several learned papers & books including "A Manual of Electro-dynamics". He is commemorated on a brass plaque in All Saints Church.

 

"In memory of the Revd James Cumming MA FRS formerly fellow of Trinity College Cambridge 46 years Professor of chemistry at that university And for nearly 43 years Rector of this parish Who died at North Runcton rectory November 10 1861 in the 85th year of his age and is buried in this churchyard. Also of Sarah his widow Eldest daughter of Charles Humphrey Esqre of St Andrews Close Cambridge Who died at Scarborough December 31 1872 in the 75th year of her age and is buried at Gainford Co Durham."

The plague goes on to record that it was erected by their 3 surviving children: James John; Isabella, wife of Henry Bacchus; and Harriet Sophia (Edleston) in 1890.

In 1835 his newly ordained nephew Joseph George Cumming (1812-1868) was appointed as his curate. Joseph moved on to become a teacher at the West Riding Preparatory School in 1838 and, later, was for 15 years Vice-Principal of King William's College on the Isle of Man.
