North Runcton
Calton Consort perform at North Runcton Church
17th November 2001

The Edinburgh Festival is famous around the world, and a sample of that city's culture came to North Runcton Church on the 17th of November 2001, in the shape of the Calton Consort. This twelve-strong group was formed especially for the occasion, and boasts members of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra Chorus and the Scottish Chamber Choir, amongst others. It always promised to be a memorable event, and no-one was disappointed.

A light and varied programme included sacred songs by Tallis and Mozart, folk songs by Vaughan Williams and, of particular local interest, five choral dances by Benjamin Britten. These were from his opera Gloriana and are set in Norwich's Guildhall during a visit by Queen Elizabeth I. Also featured were two pieces for flute, oboe, bassoon and piano by Telemann.

The performance was crisp, professional and enthusiastic and very well received by an appreciative audience. The acoustics of All Saints' Church complimented the Consort perfectly, and it is all the more appropriate that the proceeds from the evening have gone to help restore Henry Bell's legacy to North Runcton. Two of the choir hail from West Norfolk; one, Tessa Humby, grew up in the village and now works as a language support teacher in Edinburgh.

Further treats followed the concert. There was a finger buffet and mulled wine to enjoy while catching up with friends and neighbours. A raffle was held, and in all £370 was raised for the restoration appeal. Many thanks to everyone who made this wonderful evening possible, especially the choir (not least for making the 680 mile round trip!) and to Linda Fuller and helpers for catering and organisation.
